Cognition

The components of cognition include perception, attention, memory, language, problem-solving and decision-making, all working together to help us acquire knowledge and understanding. Cognition can be delayed in development and can decline as we age. Children use these abilities to make sense of and organize their world. Children up to age 12 typically think in concrete ways, including things like how to combine, separate, order and transform objects and actions. Adolescence is when more complex thinking processes begin to develop. Executive functioning is an umbrella term used for the management of cognitive processes.
